Tucked away in the tranquil restricted zone of Sha Tau Kok lies San Lau Street, a hidden gem that whispers tales of a vibrant past. This unassuming row of 22 connected white, two-storey “Tong Lau” (Chinese Building) with pitched roofs and arcaded verandas might now seem modest today, but it was once the beating heart of a thriving community.
San Lau Street was the lifeblood of Sha Tau Kok, brimming with life and commerce. It was home to a diverse array of establishments, including goldsmiths, rice merchants, dentists, clinics, grocery stores, furniture makers, bakeries, kindergartens, toy shops, cafés, gambling dens, photo studios, and even coffin shops. Just outside, a lively marketplace flourished, offering fresh seafood directly from the coast and an eclectic mix of goods from Hong Kong and the Mainland China.
A mural, discreetly nestled in a narrow alley, transports visitors back in time. It reimagines the street’s vibrant energy, immersing them in the spirit of excitement, connection, and community that once defined San Lau Street.
