Kila uses fantasy and boundless imagination in his two artworks to reinterpret the daily lives of locals leaving and returning home across bridges.
Kila’s Homeward Bound at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall Plaza consists of two parts: the Home No.9 “Taste of The Lost Memory Home” as the centrepiece and the Twinkle Twinkle Little Square with “twinkling figures” dispersed throughout the plaza.
Kila’s imagination of Tsuen Wan and his home inspired the creation of this art installation. Kila lived in Tsuen Wan as a child but has no memories about the area. He fantasises about Tsuen Wan, also known as the “City of Footbridges”, as footbridges are everywhere. He often asks himself, “Could I cross some sort of bridge to retrieve my long-lost memory?”

His vision of home in the centrepiece sculpture is distinct and filled with infantile innocence, incorporating a fried egg, an avocado, and a tomato. The twinkling figures symbolise the vibrant local community. The exhibition creatively blends a meticulously handcrafted sculpture (later cast and enlarged) with found object art, creating an intriguing union of traditional craftsmanship and modern art style.
Kila’s art always exudes a sense of warmth and comfort. The wooden bridge is a physical link between his artwork and the audience and represents the opportunity for interaction. It beckons those who admire his works to come closer, allowing them to find solace in sitting near his creations. His deliberate selection of warm-hearted colour tones and styles generates an atmosphere that emotionally connects with individuals.

ABOUT THE CREATOR
Kila Cheung
Painter and Sculptor
A painter and sculptor, Kila Cheung is one of the emerging stars of the Hong Kong art scene. His unique artistic oeuvre manifested his value for childishness, curiosity, and the courage to think outside of the box and dream big. In 2017, Kila started creating his acclaimed series of wooden sculptures when he left home for Japan to begin his internship. His colourful works are sentimental and reflective with a hint of youthful rebellion, finding resonance with young collectors across Asia. Kila earned a degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He won the esteemed “DFA Young Design Talent Award” in 2016. His talent has taken him to various cities worldwide, where he has held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Taipei and London, as well as collaboration with numerous international brands.
